About Hailsham Bonfire Society

Hailsham Bonfire Society (HBS) is a volunteer-led community organisation based in Hailsham, East Sussex. Since its reformation in 2005, the society has played a central role in organising one of the town’s largest and most anticipated annual events, bringing together residents, visitors and visiting bonfire societies for an evening of procession, fireworks and community celebration.

The society was re-established after a 16-year absence and successfully returned bonfire celebrations to Hailsham during the 400th anniversary year of the Gunpowder Plot. Through the dedication of its members and supporters, HBS organised a torchlit procession and fireworks display on 5 November 2005, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the town’s history.

Today, Hailsham Bonfire Society continues to grow, attracting new members of all ages and maintaining its position as one of the most active community organisations in the town.

The Annual Bonfire Celebrations

The Hailsham Bonfire Celebrations are the society’s flagship event and one of the largest free community events held in the town each year. Thousands of spectators line the streets to enjoy the torchlit procession through the town centre before gathering for a spectacular fireworks display at Western Road Recreation Ground.

The event regularly welcomes visiting bonfire societies from across Sussex, creating an impressive procession featuring hundreds of participants carrying flaming torches, society banners, costumes and ceremonial regalia.

The celebrations are organised entirely by volunteers and rely heavily on fundraising, sponsorship and public support throughout the year.

Community and Charity

At the heart of Hailsham Bonfire Society is a commitment to the local community. In addition to organising the annual bonfire celebrations, the society raises funds throughout the year to support local charities and community causes.

The society’s fundraising activities help maintain the bonfire celebrations while also providing financial support to a range of charitable organisations. Recent beneficiary charities have included Inspire Sussex and the Children With Cancer Fund.

HBS also contributes to community initiatives within the town, including annual remembrance displays and other projects that enhance the local environment and support civic pride.

Membership

Hailsham Bonfire Society welcomes new members who wish to become involved in the organisation and delivery of its events. Members play an important role throughout the year, supporting fundraising activities, attending events, helping with event planning and representing Hailsham at bonfire celebrations across the region.

The society includes a thriving junior section, encouraging younger generations to become involved and helping to secure the future of Hailsham Bonfire Society for years to come.

Flaming Fun Day

Alongside the annual bonfire celebrations, Hailsham Bonfire Society organises Flaming Fun Day, a free community event held at Western Road Recreation Ground. The event features entertainment, attractions, food vendors, stalls and activities for all ages, providing an opportunity for local residents to support the society while enjoying a family day out.

Supporting HBS

As an independent volunteer organisation, Hailsham Bonfire Society relies on the support of local businesses, sponsors, members and the wider community. Every donation, sponsorship and fundraising contribution helps ensure the continued success of the society’s events and charitable activities.

Through the dedication of its volunteers and supporters, Hailsham Bonfire Society continues to deliver memorable events that bring the community together and contribute to the town’s cultural life year after year.
